"Not a poker baller by any means, just a small stakes grinder, but last year I spent 5 months in Thailand (Samui) and right now I’m on my 7 months ‘vacation’ in Indonesia (Bali).
The good thing about those places is that you can find a really baller place for rent for a relatively cheap price (around $1500) and a simple yet pretty nice house/apartment for as cheap as $400-$500.
The local food is cheap, but you’ll get fed up with it after your 1st month. To such an extent that you’ll never want to eat it again.
Nobody speaks English. Everybody will smile and nod their heads like they totally understand what you’re saying to them. But they don’t. And to get what you want (even simple things like a phone number or address) you have to put in a lot of effort.
People are increadibly lazy.
Climate is pretty tough. Heat, rains, mosquitoes, ants, flies, cockroaches etc..
It’s a totally different culture and you gotta spend a lot of time and effort in learning natives’ language and understanding them. And even if you will, still you’ll always remain a stranger.
Overall I totally agree with the article that Asia is great for a couple-of-months vacation, but to live here one should strongly consider all pros and cons and of course live here for a while to make a point for himself.
